Mbeya Region’s electricity project nears completion, benefiting over 3,400 residents

The electrification project in Mbeya Region is nearing completion, promising vital energy access for thousands of residents.

The initiative to connect 105 hamlets to electricity has reached 93 percent completion, benefiting over 3,400 residents. The project, valued at 10.9bn/-, is being executed by the Electrical Transmission and Distribution Construction and Maintenance Company (ETDCO) and is on track to finish by May 2026.

Progress in Mbeya’s Electrification Project

Members of the Board of Directors of the Rural Energy Agency (REA) recently inspected the project and expressed satisfaction with its progress. The project aims to connect a total of 3,465 customers to electricity, significantly enhancing the quality of life in the region.

ETDCO’s Director of Technical Services, Mr. Abdallah Mitenda, confirmed that the company is well-positioned to complete the project ahead of schedule. The project includes the construction of a 1.5-kilometre medium-voltage power line and 210 kilometres of low-voltage distribution lines, along with the installation of 105 transformers.

Mbeya Residents Anticipate Benefits from Electricity Access

Residents in the project areas are preparing their homes for immediate connection once the service becomes available, which will cost 27,000/-. Many have expressed gratitude to the government for the initiative, recognizing its potential to boost social and economic development.

Access to electricity is expected to enhance business activities, education, and health services in these rural communities. The project is seen as a catalyst for significant transformation, opening up new development opportunities and improving livelihoods.
