Zimbabwe’s palaeontological landscape is evolving with the discovery of a new dinosaur species.
After eight years of excavation and analysis, scientists have named a new dinosaur, Musango matusadonaensis, found in Lake Kariba. This discovery sheds light on a critical period of prehistory and highlights Africa’s potential in palaeontological research.
New Dinosaur Discovery in Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba
Musango matusadonaensis roamed the ancient supercontinent Gondwana around 210 million years ago during the late Triassic period. This bipedal dinosaur, a relative of long-necked dinosaurs like Diplodocus, was approximately 4.5 meters long and weighed 222 kg. The discovery was made possible thanks to a dedicated team of international scientists who navigated the challenging terrain of Lake Kariba.
The name Musango translates to “living in the bush” in Shona, honoring the region’s wildlife guide who assisted the researchers. Despite the dangers posed by local wildlife, the team successfully excavated bones from various parts of the dinosaur’s body, although the absence of a skull remains a mystery.
Challenges and Opportunities in Zimbabwe’s Palaeontology
Zimbabwe has historically been underrepresented in palaeontological studies, with Musango being only the fifth dinosaur named from the country. Factors such as the remoteness of study sites and historical civil conflicts have hindered research efforts.
