The Jetour T2’s recognition as the 2026 Car of the Year was announced during the South African Car of the Year awards held in Johannesburg. This event highlighted the increasing presence of Chinese automotive brands, with seven of them among the 18 finalists. The T2 also excelled in the Mild Adventure category, outperforming established models such as the Hyundai Santa Fe and BYD Shark 6.

This win signifies a changing tide in a market traditionally dominated by European and Japanese manufacturers. The South African Guild of Mobility Journalists, which oversees the competition, emphasized the importance of this achievement in the context of the automotive industry’s evolution in the region.

Key Categories and Competitors

In addition to the overall title, the Jetour T2’s success was complemented by other notable wins. The Omoda C7 took home the Family category award, beating competitors like the Volkswagen Tayron. The Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI won in the Compact category, while the Land Rover Defender Octa secured the Adventure category. Audi maintained a strong presence, with the Audi A5 winning the Premium category and the Audi RS Q8 taking the Performance category.

Public voting also played a crucial role, with the Chery Tiggo 7 winning the 2026 Old Mutual Insure People’s Choice Award. This year’s awards considered over 55 qualifying vehicles launched in 2025, showcasing a diverse range of options for South African consumers.
