A new EU-funded initiative aims to enhance conservation efforts in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a vital ecosystem shared by Botswana and South Africa.
This 30-month project, known as the “Integrated Management for Biodiversity Conservation and Community Resilience in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park,” seeks to strengthen biodiversity conservation and improve community resilience. It is backed by a €2.5 million investment from the EU’s Global Gateway NaturAfrica programme.
Strengthening Biodiversity in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, established in 1999, represents a collaborative effort between Botswana and South Africa to protect natural resources and support local communities. This initiative will focus on enhancing biodiversity conservation and operational management within the park, which is home to unique species adapted to harsh desert conditions.
Climate variability and land-use pressures pose significant threats to the park’s ecological integrity. The initiative aims to address these challenges through coordinated management and cross-border cooperation, ensuring the long-term resilience of this iconic landscape.
Kgalagadi Project’s Goals and Community Engagement
Central to the initiative is the recognition that the health of the Kgalagadi ecosystem is intertwined with the well-being of surrounding communities. The project will promote community participation and livelihood opportunities, emphasizing sustainable approaches that benefit both people and nature.
Early priorities include establishing governance structures in Botswana and developing management plans for wildlife areas adjacent to the park. Plans for a tourism development strategy and community development plan are also underway, aimed at generating sustainable revenue streams from wildlife and tourism.
Next Steps for the Kgalagadi Initiative
- Establish governance structures in Botswana.
- Develop management plans for four wildlife management areas.
- Create a tourism development strategy.
- Implement a community development plan for sustainable revenue generation.
This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing conservation and community resilience in Southern Africa.
