A groundbreaking discovery in South Africa has unveiled the youngest dinosaur footprints ever found in the region.

A team of ichnologists has identified 132-million-year-old dinosaur tracks in Knysna, located along the Western Cape coastline. This discovery, made in early 2025, provides a rare insight into the Early Cretaceous period, a time from which few fossils have been recovered locally.

Youngest Dinosaur Tracks Found in Knysna

The dinosaur tracks were discovered at the Brenton Formation, a small, 40-meter-long exposure often submerged by high tides. Researchers identified more than two dozen tracks, indicating a significant dinosaur presence during the Cretaceous era. This finding is approximately 50 million years younger than the well-known tracks found in the Karoo Basin, filling a crucial gap in South Africa’s paleontological record.

The tracks were left by a diverse group of dinosaurs, including bipedal, carnivorous theropods and potentially large, long-necked herbivorous sauropods or ornithopods. They were preserved in an ancient estuarine environment, showcasing a stark contrast to the modern landscape of the Knysna estuary.

This discovery is pivotal as it suggests that dinosaurs thrived in Southern Africa much longer than previously thought. Before this, the region’s dinosaur fossil record seemed to end abruptly around 180 million years ago due to massive volcanic eruptions. The Knysna tracks not only provide age significance but also highlight the rarity of dinosaur skeletal remains in the Western Cape.
