The Durban University of Technology is leading the charge in multilingual education through its recent Translingual Symposium.

The Faculty of Health Sciences hosted the symposium at Mansfield Hall, emphasizing the importance of multilingualism in education. Dr Khosi Mpofana opened the event, highlighting how translingual practices align with DUT’s commitment to transformation and student-centered learning.

Participants engaged in discussions on embedding translingual principles in curriculum design and teaching methods. The symposium coincided with Mother Tongue Month, reinforcing the need to embrace multilingual realities in South African universities.

Professor Pavitra Pillay framed translingualism as a strategic priority for the university. She emphasized that multilingualism enriches academic engagement and patient care, urging a rethinking of traditional teaching methods.

The keynote address by Ms Nobuhle Luphondo underscored the value of integrating students’ languages into the learning environment, fostering deeper understanding and participation.
