Durban is set to transform its beachfront with a new R1 billion amusement park.
The eThekwini Municipality has unveiled plans for a family entertainment park at the former Durban Funworld site, aiming for completion by 2027. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to revitalize the beachfront economy and attract private investment.
Durban’s New Amusement Park to Boost Tourism
The planned amusement park will feature attractions like the Lightning Roller Coaster, Disko 24, and a vertical swing. A highlight will be a 1,500 sqm virtual reality theme park with over 160 interactive games and e-sports activations. This project is developed in collaboration with two Italian firms known for their work with Ferrari World, Universal Studios, and Disneyland.
Mayor Cyril Xaba emphasized the importance of this project in enhancing Durban’s status as a premier coastal destination. The park will be designed as a family-friendly environment, with various zones catering to different age groups, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.
Key Features of the Amusement Park
In addition to thrilling rides, the park will include pedestrian walkways, viewing decks, themed food courts, and leisure areas. The focus on an alcohol-free environment aims to create a safe space for families. This development is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to renew the Golden Mile and enhance the beachfront experience.
