Remembering António Mota: A Legacy of Vision and Impact
Today, Portugal mourns the passing of one of its most influential business leaders, António Mota, who left a lasting mark on the nation’s construction industry and beyond. The former president of Mota-Engil, António Mota, died in Porto at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy that intertwines innovation, entrepreneurship, and social responsibility. In a heartfelt statement, António Ramalho Eanes reflected on their long-standing friendship, recalling the deep-rooted connection he shared with the Mota family, which began after they returned from Angola during a tumultuous period.
António Mota stepped into his father’s shoes, carrying forward a vision that began with Manuel António da Mota, the founder of Mota & Companhia, in 1946. From the late 1970s, António Mota played a crucial role in transforming the company from a local entity into Portugal’s most diversified and internationally recognized construction group. Under his leadership, Mota-Engil expanded its reach to 21 countries across three continents—Europe, Africa, and America—demonstrating a remarkable adaptability and business acumen that positioned the firm at the forefront of global construction.
Eanes highlighted how Mota’s leadership was characterized by a commitment to not just profitability but also to social impact. Through the Manuel António da Mota Foundation, he initiated numerous projects aimed at social upliftment, which greatly contributed to the perception of Portuguese civil engineering as a significant force for both national and international progress. “His contributions to socially beneficial initiatives will be remembered as a hallmark of his leadership,” Eanes noted.
Born in 1954 in Amarante, António Mota was the only son among four siblings. He pursued his education in Civil Engineering at the University of Porto, where his commitment to the family business became evident early on, spending summers working on various projects. Despite his substantial accomplishments, Mota cherished his family’s bond over a low-profile lifestyle, often preferring weekends spent with loved ones.
Mota-Engil has shown remarkable financial resilience, reporting attributable profits of €92 million in the first nine months of this year—an impressive 20% increase year-on-year, though business volume saw a slight decline of 1.4%. The Mota family maintains a strong stake in the company, showcasing an enduring commitment to its future.
As Portugal reflects on António Mota’s life, it is clear that his visionary approach and dedication to social responsibility have left an indelible mark on the nation. “While his family grieves the loss of a beloved member, Portugal grieves the loss of one of its finest entrepreneurs,” Eanes poignantly stated. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us of the profound impact one individual can have on society.
