Major Milestone Achieved in South Africa's Renewable Energy Sector

In an exciting development for South Africa’s renewable energy landscape, Anthem has achieved a significant construction milestone at its Northern Cluster renewable energy project. This week, the team celebrated the completion of the final wind turbine foundation at the Ishwati Emoyeni Wind Farm—an impressive feat that marks the completion of all 96 foundations across the cluster. This achievement is a testament to the commitment and hard work of everyone involved in the project, including engineers, construction workers, and project managers.

The Northern Cluster is an ambitious project, comprising three 140 MW wind farms located near Murraysburg in the picturesque Western Cape. Each wind farm will be equipped with 32 state-of-the-art Vestas V163-4.5 MW turbines. These turbines promise not only to harness the power of the wind but also to be a visual marvel, with a hub height of 96 meters and a rotor diameter of 163 meters. The project is being executed by Raubex Infra (Pty) Ltd, renowned for their expertise in delivering civil and electrical balance-of-plant works, which include all the essential turbine foundations and distribution grid connection infrastructure.

Sam Cook, Anthem’s Head of Asset Management and Construction Project Manager, expressed his pride and appreciation for the dedicated teams that made this achievement possible. “The completion of the 96th turbine foundation is a major milestone for Anthem and the Raubex Infra teams,” Cook stated. “It reflects the hard work of countless individuals, from steel fixers to concrete truck drivers and engineers. Today’s foundation pour began shortly after midnight and finished late in the afternoon, exemplifying the dedication of our construction teams.”

With the completion of the foundations, the installation of the wind turbines will ramp up over the next couple of years, with full operation slated to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026. When operational, the Northern Cluster is expected to significantly bolster South Africa’s energy supply while contributing to wider economic development.

This project not only reinforces South Africa’s commitment to renewable energy but also signals the country’s transition towards a more sustainable and resilient energy future. The nation’s strategic investment in renewable resources stands to play a pivotal role in addressing climate change and promoting energy independence.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to follow the inspiring progress in South Africa’s renewable energy sector!
