Namibia Paving the Way in Renewable Energy with 50MW Solar Power Plant

Last Friday marked a significant milestone in Namibia’s journey toward sustainability, as Deputy Minister of Energy Gaudentia Kröhne officially broke ground for the Astra Farm 50MW solar power plant near Gobabis in the Omaheke Region. This transformative project is poised to propel Namibia into the spotlight as a leading renewable energy hub in Africa.

During the ceremony, Deputy Minister Kröhne eloquently expressed the vision behind this solar endeavor, stating, “This 50MW solar park is not just a power plant; it is a symbol of transition, hope, collaboration, and Namibia’s ambition to become a leader in renewable energy on the African continent.” Her words resonate deeply, underscoring the country’s commitment to utilizing its abundant local resources for the betterment of all Namibians.

Alex Nelis, the CEO of TerraWatt Netherlands and Namibia, also took the stage to share exciting news—the Astra project will kick off with the current 50MW capacity, but there are plans in place to double that output once the initial phase is complete. “In this beautiful country, there is plenty of room,” Nelis remarked, highlighting how Namibia’s vast landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for expansive solar installations, contrasting sharply with the land scarcity in the Netherlands.

Rhys Mbala, representing Trinitas Consulting Engineers, provided an update on the project’s logistical progress. He confirmed the completion of all necessary environmental clearances and the green light from the Electricity Control Board and NamPower for the power purchase agreement. The energy harnessed from this significant solar installation will not only contribute to the national grid but also power a new rare earth mineral mine near Katima Mulilo. The collaboration highlights how renewable energy can support various sectors, including mining, which is critical for enhancing Namibia’s mineral capabilities.

Furthermore, the solar plant will consist of 71,429 solar panels, collectively capable of generating an astounding amount of electricity. Each panel is designed to produce up to 70 watts, making this project an engineering marvel. TerraWatt’s commitment to quality is evident, as they plan to implement the Scope 2 certification for safe solar installation, which would make Namibia the first African nation to adopt such a standard.

A noteworthy aspect of this initiative is TerraWatt’s engagement with local communities, particularly focusing on youth empowerment via its collaboration with the organization Youth4 Purpose. As part of their support, TerraWatt recently donated N0,000 to further training programs in renewable energy skills for the youth, a crucial step toward fostering a skilled workforce for the future.

This monumental event cements Namibia’s place in the renewable energy landscape and exemplifies how strategic initiatives can lead to sustainable development, community empowerment, and a brighter future for generations to come.
