CHOICE Children’s Choir Sends Off for International Festival in Spain
In a heartwarming celebration, the CHOICE Children’s Choir, consisting of talented young singers aged 8 to 15, was honored at a vibrant send-off concert as they prepare to represent Zimbabwe at the renowned 11th CANTA AL MAR Festival Coral International in Spain. This uplifting event highlighted the choir’s commitment to showcasing the rich tapestry of Zimbabwean culture through music and traditional dance.
Supported by the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ), the choir is not only focused on singing but also takes pride in incorporating traditional Zimbabwean dance into their performances. Their unique blend of music and movement exemplifies the deep cultural connections intrinsic to African heritage, and it resonates perfectly with audiences both locally and globally.
As the choir gears up for their big stage in Spain, one young member, Karen Chimuti, expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “This performance is expected to showcase the best of Zimbabwe’s musical talent and leave a lasting impression on audiences worldwide. With our passion, energy, and dedication, we are sure to make our country proud.” The excitement is palpable as these young stars prepare to light up the international stage.
The versatility and creativity of the choir shine through their performances, as they mix traditional and modern styles, providing a platform for young talents from diverse backgrounds. “This is a great accomplishment for our children who will represent the nation. I am so proud of all our hard work and raising the Zimbabwean flag high,” a chorister mentioned, highlighting the choir’s unifying powers and commitment to cultural exchange.
During the send-off, Napoleon Nyanhi, the Executive Director of NACZ, presented the choir members with their green blazers, a symbol of their national pride. He commended the choir for the opportunity they have to showcase authentic Zimbabwean traditions in their performances. “Look at that! Enjoy this. The way it resonates and the classy presentation by our new generation of artists is remarkable. I’m excited that our children will gain experiences they can bring back to share with others,” he stated, encouraging parental support for artistic pursuits, whether in music, dance, painting, or other forms of creative expression.
Since their international debut at a competition in South Africa in 2018, the CHOICE Children’s Choir has made significant strides on the global stage. In 2023, they showcased their excellence at the International Lisbon Sings Choir Competition, bringing home two silver medals in championship categories, proudly representing Africa alongside adult choirs from Europe. Their international success culminated in 2024 at the Sing for Gold — World Choral Cup in Spain, where they earned Zimbabwe’s first-ever gold medal in a championship category, along with another silver medal.
The annual CANTA AL MAR festival in Calella and Barcelona serves as a vital platform to highlight the world’s choral talents, and it continues to be a highlight for many choirs globally since its inception in 2012.
