Community Uplifted Through Goat Pass-On Program in Kasungu District, Malawi
In the vibrant Mphampha Village, nestled in Traditional Authority Chulu of the Kasungu District, an empowering initiative by World Vision is bringing joy and hope to local families. Recently, the community celebrated as they received goats through the Goat Pass-On Program—a project designed to make a significant impact on food security, income generation, and educational support.
Among the recipients was Musandivute Tembo, a 53-year-old father of five, whose joy was palpable as he expressed his gratitude for this generous gift. “I am extremely grateful to World Vision for these goats,” he said. “I have a Form One student, and I was worried about how I would pay his school fees. Now, I’m confident that I’ll be able to sell some of the goats and use the money to support my son’s education.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the community, highlighting how pivotal support systems like this can be in transforming lives.
Another beneficiary, Davison Kanthungulu, who proudly received goats as well, shared similar excitement. “This is a dream come true,” he exclaimed. “The goats will help me provide for my family and improve our livelihood.” This program not only offers livestock but also inspires hope and resilience among families facing economic hardships.
According to Charles Chimombo, Director of Operations at World Vision Malawi, the Goat Pass-On Program is more than just a distribution of livestock; it’s a strategy aimed at enhancing food security and educational standards for vulnerable children. “We want to help communities improve their income and asset creation through the goats, while also improving the well-being of their children,” he explained, showcasing the multi-faceted benefits of this initiative.
Running for two years now, the Goat Pass-On Program targets approximately 2,700 households within the Mutchenda program area, with a goal to boost livestock contributions to food and nutrition security, as well as community resilience by 2026. “We’re committed to supporting these communities and helping them achieve their goals,” chimed in Chimombo. “We believe that with the right support, communities can grow, sell, and improve the well-being of their children.”
As the sun set on an inspiring day in Mphampha Village, community members left with more than just goats—they left with renewed hope for a prosperous future. Their faces lit up with excitement, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination this initiative has fostered in the heart of Malawi.
