East Kentucky Students Unite for Global Change: Building an Orphan Care Center in Malawi
In the picturesque and community-focused Jessamine County, Kentucky, a group of enthusiastic students from Rosenwald-Dunbar Elementary is turning compassion into action, aiming to uplift children across the globe. These young visionaries, fueled by a desire to make a difference, are embarking on an inspiring journey to establish an orphan care center in Malawi, Africa.
The initiative began in a third-grade classroom just six months ago when fourth grader Ella Combs and her classmates were moved by a video showcasing the challenges faced by children in Malawi. “We saw a video in my class on Malawi, and the kids were so moved they said, ‘we want to build an orphanage right now,’” shared their dedicated teacher, Lisa Preston. This poignant moment sparked the formation of Jessamine Cares, a group dedicated to humanitarian efforts that have already attracted attention and support from within the community.
The commitment displayed by these students has garnered admiration from local leaders. “The passion of the kids was so powerful that it touched everyone who heard about it,” stated Preston. Not only have they engaged with Jessamine County residents, but they’ve also partnered with Circle of Hope, a local organization already working in Malawi. Through presentations and community rallies, they’ve shared their vision, hoping to inspire all of Jessamine County to come together for this noble cause.
Their ambitious goal is to raise ,000 to create the orphan care center. The students believe that if every student in the Jessamine County school system contributes just , they could reach this pivotal milestone. “Some days we’re high-fiving, saying, ‘we got this!’” Combs chimed in, showcasing their determination to make a tangible impact.
The enthusiasm was palpable during an assembly where Jessamine County officials showed their support. Mayor Harold Rainwater proclaimed October as “Jessamine Cares Month,” while Judge Executive David West presented a generous ,500 donation to jumpstart the efforts. The excitement reached new heights when the students connected with children in Malawi during a virtual event, who sang a joyful tune to inspire the young fundraisers.
With their sights set firmly on making a difference, students will be launching a change drive when they return from fall break. This initiative will encourage students and community members alike to contribute to their cause.
