University of Johannesburg Empowers Public with Free Online Courses

By Rorisang Modiba

In an exciting development for lifelong learners and job seekers alike, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is now offering two online courses free of charge to the public. This initiative not only enhances accessibility to education but also aims to equip individuals with crucial skills for success in the rapidly evolving job market.

The first course, titled Artificial Intelligence in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (AI in 4IR), was introduced in 2019 as a specialized program exclusively for UJ students. Now, anyone interested can enroll without any fees or prior requirements. This course delves into the fascinating world of artificial intelligence, offering students an understanding of how AI functions and its transformative effects on our daily lives. As UJ Vice-Chancellor Professor Tshilidzi Marwala aptly puts it, the course will not cover coding but will emphasize the profound impact AI is likely to have on one’s life and career choices.

The second course available is African Insights, which explores rich African traditions, contemporary discussions, and diverse ways of thinking that characterize the continent. This course is particularly significant for fostering a deeper appreciation of African culture and intellectual heritage.

Both courses are structured into eight easily navigable units, allowing participants to learn at their own pace. With assessments through quick multiple-choice quizzes, students can validate their newfound knowledge. Upon completion, participants will receive a digital certificate, providing a valuable credential that can be shared with future employers.

Professor Marwala emphasizes the importance of adaptability in enhancing one’s career profile. He stated, “Be adaptable, because 4IR is really about adaptability.” This resonates especially well as industries worldwide continue to embrace technological advancements. UJ’s move to offer these courses embodies a commitment to preparing the workforce for the future and ensuring Africa remains at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Offering these courses without the barriers of cost and enrollment criteria is a significant step toward democratizing education. The university hopes that this initiative will empower both students and everyday individuals, transforming aspirations into achievements.

If you’re looking to enhance your skill set and stay relevant in today’s job market, enrolling in these courses might just be your golden opportunity!
