Namibia Ready for Elections: ECN Launches Comprehensive Voter Education Campaign

Windhoek – As Namibia approaches its much-anticipated regional councils and local authority elections scheduled for November 26, 2023, the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) is doubling down on efforts to ensure every eligible voice is heard. On Friday, ECN’s Deputy Director for Voter and Civic Education, Marilyn Kazetjikuria, unveiled an ambitious multi-platform civic and voter education campaign designed to boost voter engagement across all demographics, particularly targeting the country’s vibrant youth population.

Kazetjikuria revealed an extensive outreach plan during a press conference marking the launch of the provisional voters’ register in Windhoek. This initiative kicked off on June 24 and will continue until three days before the elections, reflecting the ECN’s determination to empower citizens and enhance electoral participation. The campaign’s goals are commendable, especially the focus on improving voter turnout, which was recorded at 33% for regional elections and 39% for local elections in 2020.

The campaign aims to resonate across diverse communities by utilizing a variety of communication methods. From traditional radio and television broadcasts to social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), the ECN’s strategy is multi-faceted and highly engaging. To ensure inclusivity, all educational materials will be made available in various languages, including accessible formats such as braille and sign language, making the electoral process more approachable for everyone, including people living with disabilities and those in remote areas.

Kazetjikuria emphasized the importance of collaboration, highlighting partnerships with political parties, civil society organizations, and faith-based groups as pivotal for the initiative’s overall success. Furthermore, youth ambassadors are on the ground in all 14 regions of Namibia, participating in campus outreach events at universities and vocational schools to inspire and mobilize the younger generation.

To streamline communication and assist voters, the ECN is also establishing a toll-free call center for election-related queries, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and support. The campaign’s overarching theme is ‘Enhancing Confidence and Trust in Electoral Processes,’ accompanied by a strong slogan: ‘Get involved, put your voice in the box,’ which encourages Namibians to take an active role in their democracy.

As we inch closer to election day, the ECN’s proactive approach is not only commendable but crucial in ensuring a politically engaged populace. By focusing on education and accessibility, Namibia is setting an inspiring example of how to conduct elections that are inclusive, transparent, and representative of the will of its people.

By shining a light on the importance of civic participation, Namibia is taking significant steps towards fostering a culture of democracy that can inspire other nations across Africa and beyond. Let’s rally together and make our voices count!
