A Positive Shift in Education: Northern Province Hosts Landmark Conference

In a remarkable step toward improving education for all, Northern Province is playing host to the 34th Senior Education Officers’ Conference—a first for this vibrant region. The event, launched at the Popondetta Independence Oval on Monday, signifies more than just a gathering of officials; it embodies hope and collaborative efforts to enhance educational pathways across Papua New Guinea.

Education Minister Lucas Dekena emphasized the importance of holding this significant conference after the nation celebrated its 50th Independence anniversary. “By convening here in Popondetta, we send a strong message: education belongs to every province, district, ward, and family,” Dekena stated passionately. His words highlight an inclusive vision, ensuring that no child is left behind, regardless of their circumstances.

The government’s commitment to extending quality education accessibility is outlined in the National Education Plan for 2020-2029, which aims to provide viable educational paths for every child from early childhood through to rewarding careers. “We must focus on strengthening foundational learning, ensuring safe and inclusive schools, empowering teachers, and expanding alternative pathways like Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and higher education,” Dekena said.

Adding to this momentum, Northern Governor Gary Juffa made a compelling case for a “great reset in education” as the nation steps into its next golden era. He underscored the rapid pace of change in the world driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and technology. “Are we preparing our children not just to be citizens of Papua New Guinea but also global citizens who can contribute meaningfully in a changing world?” Juffa asked, urging teachers to voice their concerns openly.

Both Dekena and Juffa highlighted the critical role that teachers play in unlocking the potential of Papua New Guinean children. “Our kids are brilliant and full of promise,” they asserted. Realizing this potential requires bold reforms, empowered educators, and a united approach towards education.

The theme of this year’s conference—“Accessible Education Pathways for All”—has brought together over 100 senior education officers to brainstorm actionable strategies to foster a robust education system that benefits every child in the country.

As Northern Province takes center stage in this vital discourse, it’s evident that the future of education in Papua New Guinea is bright, filled with opportunities and a shared commitment to ensuring every child has the chance to succeed.

Stay tuned for more updates on this pivotal conference and its outcomes for the education landscape in Papua New Guinea.
