South Africa Unleashes 1,290 MW of Solar Power in Exciting New Energy Initiative!

In an exciting development for South Africa’s energy landscape, the Department of Electricity and Energy has announced the awarding of 1,290 megawatts (MW) of new solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity under the seventh bid window of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). This strategic move aims to bolster the country’s renewable energy sector while also pivoting from previously unused onshore wind capacity to streamline solar procurement.

All six awarded projects are concentrated in the vibrant Free State province, renowned for its potential for renewable energy generation. The bid prices for these solar projects ranged between R499.99/MWh and R514.06/MWh, showcasing the competitive nature of this renewable energy market.

Leading the charge is Scatec ASA, a prominent player in the global renewable energy space, which clinched preferred bidder status for a whopping 846 MW across three utility-scale projects within the Kroonstad PV Cluster. These exciting projects include:

Oslaagte Solar 2 (293 MW)
Oslaagte Solar 3 (293 MW)
Leeuwspruit Solar (260 MW)

Scatec’s CEO, Terje Pilskog, expressed enthusiasm about this significant achievement, stating, “The Kroonstad PV Cluster represents a remarkable addition to Scatec’s expanding renewable energy footprint in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our selection under REIPPPP underscores our commitment as a trusted partner and leading developer in the region.”

Additionally, the remaining 590 MW has been allocated to Red Rocket, which will be developing three noteworthy projects:

Dwaalboom 3 (180 MW)
Florida Park (200 MW)
Virginia 4 (210 MW)

The competitive bidding round, which kicked off in December 2023, saw an extension of the original submission deadline from April to August 2024, allowing bidders more time to refine their proposals in light of project preparation needs.

Looking ahead, the Department of Electricity and Energy has indicated that there may be more allocations under Bid Window 7 for compliant bidders, provided that they meet value-for-money assessments and megawatt reallocations outlined in the proposal request.

The surge in solar initiatives not only reflects South Africa’s commitment to renewable energy but also showcases its potential for sustainable development—a bright light on the path toward a cleaner, greener future.
