On Rural Development Day, the spotlight shone on an inspiring initiative that is reshaping the agricultural landscape in Rwanda. The United Nations’ International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) highlighted how accessible technology is making a significant impact on farming practices, particularly for women in rural communities.
At the heart of this transformation is the innovative “845” freephone service, which has empowered over 3,400 women farmers with essential agricultural training. From effective pest control methods to the safe use of pesticides, this 24/7 service ensures that farmers can access vital information while they work in the fields. Developed by VIAMO with the support of the Rwanda Agriculture Board, the system encompasses eight comprehensive training modules—making it an invaluable resource for those in remote areas.
This initiative is part of the STARLIT project, which is funded by the China Fund in collaboration with IFAD. Beyond providing free training, the project facilitates access to microcredit, allowing smallholder farmers to invest in solar-powered irrigation systems—a crucial advancement in light of increasingly prevalent drought conditions. By leveraging technology and financial support, the project not only addresses immediate agricultural needs but also enhances long-term resilience against climate change.
The results have been nothing short of remarkable. Farmers who previously averaged maize yields of just 1.5 tonnes per acre are now enjoying harvests of up to 6 tonnes. This impressive productivity surge has led to broader community benefits; profits are being reinvested into children’s education, new business ventures, and overall improved livelihoods.
A standout example of this success is the Imirasire cooperative, which illustrates the powerful combination of local knowledge, modern technology, and targeted training to unlock rural potential. IFAD emphasizes that initiatives like these are crucial in empowering smallholder farmers, which is vital for ensuring food security and economic stability across Africa.
