Last Homes Handed Over to Families Relocated for Hazelmere Dam Upgrade: A New Chapter Begins
Johannesburg – In a heartwarming and significant milestone, South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, is set to officially hand over the last remaining homes to families who were relocated six years ago to facilitate the much-needed upgrade of the Hazelmere Dam wall. This momentous occasion marks the final phase of a project that not only enhances local infrastructure but also strengthens the community’s water supply capabilities.
Originally undertaken to bolster the Hazelmere Dam’s storage capacity, the project involved raising the dam wall by an impressive seven meters, from 86 to 93 meters. This upgrade plays a crucial role in improving water supply to the municipalities of eThekwini, iLembe, and KwaDukuza, showcasing the government’s commitment to investing in vital resources for its citizens.
Since the beginning of the year, Minister Majodina has actively participated in the relocation efforts, having previously handed over seven newly constructed homes to families in Oakford and Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal. With Sunday’s handover, three more families will receive their keys, bringing the total to seventeen homes provided to those impacted by the dam upgrade. These houses were built in alignment with government policies on land expropriation for development, a step forward in responsibly managing resources while prioritizing community welfare.
During the handover event, the minister is also expected to engage with local residents in a community meeting, further fostering local participation and ensuring that the voices of the community members are heard. This aspect of the initiative highlights the government’s strategy to maintain an open dialogue with citizens, regarding the importance of infrastructure projects and their long-term benefits.
This positive development comes at a crucial time for South Africa, as it continues to navigate water management challenges exacerbated by climate fluctuations. The successful completion of the Hazelmere Dam upgrade not only addresses immediate water needs but also stands as a testament to collaborative efforts in managing the nation’s water resources more effectively.
As we celebrate this significant achievement, one can only hope that such initiatives will inspire similar projects throughout the continent, ensuring sustainable water solutions for communities in need.
