In a significant stride towards sustainable energy, Africazine reports that Quilemba Solar Lda, a promising joint venture comprising TotalEnergies (51%), Sonangol (30%), and Maurel & Prom (19%), has officially broken ground on the 35MW Quilemba photovoltaic power plant near Lubango, in southern Angola. This ambitious project, which aims to become the largest privately-owned solar facility in the country, is poised to reshape the energy landscape of Angola.
Scheduled to commence operations in the first half of 2026, the Quilemba power plant will not only produce renewable electricity but also play a vital role in the decarbonization of the nation’s energy mix. Once fully operational, it is expected to supply sustainable electricity to nearly 40,000 homes, setting the stage for a cleaner and more environmentally friendly Angola.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 16, 2025, attended by prominent figures, including the Vice-Governor of Huíla Province and the French Ambassador to Angola, as well as various governmental and local traditional leaders.
