As Workers’ Day approaches, the Labour Party in Malta is gearing up for a grand celebration under the inspiring theme ‘Through Work: Wealth for the Maltese’ (Bix-Xogħol: il-Ġid għall-Maltin). The announcement of this year’s activities was made during a lively press conference in Valletta, led by Deputy Leader for Party Affairs, Alex Agius Saliba, and Labour Party President, Alex Scibberas.
The Labour Party echoed its long-standing commitment to enhancing working conditions within the country. Agius Saliba highlighted the historical significance of Workers’ Day in Malta, which dates back to 1923. Unlike many other nations where this day serves as a time for protest, he emphasized that in Malta, it is a joyful occasion to celebrate the strides made in labor rights and protections. The Labour Party has been at the forefront of these advancements, enacting various laws that have positively transformed the labor landscape.
Reflecting on the past decade, Agius Saliba pointed out that Malta has seen an impressive decrease in unemployment. Just a decade ago, in 2013, there were about 8,000 individuals seeking jobs. Today, Malta celebrates having the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union, a remarkable achievement that underscores the effectiveness of the Labour government’s policies.
Scibberas elaborated on the essence of this year’s theme, stating that productivity translates to shared wealth, ensuring that everyone in the community benefits according to their needs. This reinforces the Labour Party’s stance that work should be a source of dignity and prosperity for all.
As the 1st of May approaches, numerous events are planned, including engaging radio and television programs, and a documentary detailing the rich history of Workers’ Day in Malta will be showcased. The festivities will kick off with a visit from Prime Minister Robert Abela to several towns, including Paola, Qormi, and Rabat, from April 27th to 30th.
The highlight of the celebrations will undoubtedly be the mass meeting on May 1st in Merchant’s Street, Valletta. The event will commence with a parade from the General Workers’ Union to Castille Square. Prime Minister Abela, along with Deputy Leaders Ian Borg and Alex Agius Saliba, is expected to address the crowd, further promoting the achievements and ongoing efforts of the Labour Party to uplift the workforce.
Malta’s Workers’ Day promises to be a festive occasion filled with pride, reinforcing the value of hard work and the achievements of its workforce in a rapidly changing economic landscape. This year’s celebrations not only honor the past but also pave the way for a brighter future for all Maltese workers.
