Empowering Creativity: How Of Soul and Joy is Transforming Lives Through Photography

In the heart of South Africa, a nonprofit organization is making waves by harnessing the power of creativity to uplift young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Of Soul and Joy (OSJ) has been a beacon of hope for aspiring photographers in Thokoza, Gauteng, for over a decade, now expanding its inspiring mission into the rural landscapes of KwaZulu-Natal.

Recently, OSJ held an intensive workshop at Ithala Secondary School in Nkandla, a program designed specifically for 28 unemployed youth and learners eager to explore the world of visual storytelling. This two-week initiative wasn’t just an ordinary photography class; it was a chance for participants to discover artistic practices that could ultimately lead to rewarding careers.

Founder and project manager Jabulani Dhlamini emphasized the success of their original Thokoza program, which has seen numerous participants establish themselves as professional photographers. “Bringing our workshop to Nkandla reflects our commitment to providing essential creative skills in areas where opportunities are limited,” he said. “We want to create a cycle of education, leadership, and empowerment, allowing OSJ alumni to give back as mentors.”

The response from the Nkandla participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Dhlamini shared, “Many students are turning their aspirations into reality, and it’s an incredible journey to witness. We are passionate about reaching communities often overlooked in mainstream storytelling due to financial or historical barriers.

Equipped with professional-grade photography tools—ten cameras, seven point-and-shoot cameras, five laptops, and a projector—the participants dove into hands-on training. Practical lessons took them outdoors, aiding them in applying their newfound skills in real-world situations. The grand finale was a vibrant community exhibition, showcasing the students’ work for all to enjoy.

Led by a team of trained OSJ alumni and seasoned photographers—including Tshepiso Mazibuko, Thandile Zwelibanzi, Xolani Ngubeni, Teboho Mabuya, and Fuwe Molefe—this program is more than just art; it’s a lifeline for many who seek a brighter future. They aim not only to develop photography skills but also to enhance storytelling abilities, and even foster writing proficiencies like crafting personal biographies.

For aspiring photographers and storytellers, OSJ is paving the way for a more inclusive narrative within the arts community, proving that creativity can indeed change lives. As they continue to reach out to more rural communities, it’s clear that innovation and passion can go hand-in-hand with empowerment.

In an age where the power of the lens can influence perceptions and inspire change, initiatives like OSJ are vital in uplifting the next generation of storytellers.
