Tunisie Telecom Launches Exciting New Submarine Cable Project!

Tunisie Telecom Expands Digital Horizons with Third Submarine Cable

Date: 12 February 2025

In an exciting development for Tunisia’s digital landscape, Tunisie Telecom has partnered with Medusa Submarine Cable System to deploy a third submarine cable. This ambitious project aims to enhance connectivity between Tunisia and Europe, bolstering the country’s position as a major hub in the Mediterranean region.

Stretching an impressive 1,200 kilometers, the new submarine cable will have a staggering capacity of 20 terabits per second (Tbps). It will link the coastal city of Bizerte in Tunisia to Marseille, France—a significant step towards improving digital infrastructure across the Mediterranean. Work on this vital project is set to commence this year, with the cable expected to be fully operational by 2026. The agreement includes a robust contract period of 25 years, reflecting Tunisie Telecom’s commitment to long-term technological advancement.

Lassâad Ben Dhiab, the CEO of Tunisie Telecom, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “We are particularly proud to participate in the trans-Mediterranean digital connectivity project. By connecting our fiber optic infrastructure to this new Mediterranean system, Tunisie Telecom will provide more innovative and secure solutions to meet our customers’ expectations while simultaneously contributing to the growth of the Tunisian digital ecosystem.”

This initiative aligns seamlessly with Tunisia’s broader national strategy, which recently celebrated the announcement of 5G technology by Minister of Communication Technologies Sofiene Hemissi. The introduction of 5G is part of a concerted effort to enhance digital sovereignty and improve connectivity in the country. As Tunisia embraces digital transformation, expanding bandwidth through projects like this submarine cable will help reduce dependency on existing infrastructures, ensure secure global internet access, and enhance service quality for both businesses and everyday users.

With these developments, Tunisia is poised to become a key player in the digital revolution of the Mediterranean region. The deployment of this submarine cable not only strengthens Tunisia’s connection to Europe but also fosters a vibrant digital future for the nation.

Stay tuned for more updates on this and other technology initiatives that are shaping the future of North Africa!
