“Catch the Wave: Exciting Re-Screening of the Iconic Surf Film ‘Bustin’ Down the Door’!”

Celebrating Surfing Culture: Free Screening of Bustin' Down the Door at Arlington Theater

Mark your calendars! On February 14th at 2 p.m., the iconic surfing documentary Bustin’ Down the Door will be making a splash once again with a free screening at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara. This event celebrates the 50th anniversary of a pivotal moment in surfing history during the winter of 1975, when a group of visionary surfers from Australia and South Africa set out to redefine the sport.

Originally premiering at the 2008 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Bustin’ Down the Door quickly became a fan favorite, revered for its compelling storytelling and stunning visuals. Shaun Tomson, a former surfing champion and entrepreneur, has played a crucial role in bringing this film to audiences over the years. “Looking forward to the re-release!” said Sean Pratt, the Managing Director of the festival. He reminisced about the excitement of the original premiere, where enthusiastic surf fans literally tried to “bust down the doors” to get in.

This documentary, narrated by acclaimed actor Edward Norton, dives deep into the lives of surfers who left everything behind to chase their dreams in Hawaii. It follows their journey through triumphs and struggles, marking a revolutionary change in the professional surfing landscape. The film not only showcases the exuberance and radicalism of the surfing community but also highlights the rich culture that has evolved around it.

What adds to the allure of this film is its stellar soundtrack, featuring legendary artists like David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Leonard Cohen. Interestingly, the closing song comes from a local band, Johnny Black and Them Terribles, discovered by Tomson in a serendipitous moment that reflects the community spirit of Santa Barbara.

Following the screening, attendees will have the unique opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with surfing legends Ian Cairns, Peter Townend, and Shaun Tomson, who together embody the film’s spirit of adventure and change.

This special re-release is a fantastic opportunity for both surfing enthusiasts and newcomers alike to witness a defining chapter in surfing history. So, gather your friends and family and head over to the Arlington Theater for an inspiring journey back to surfing’s “last great hoorah.”

Don’t miss out on this celebration of surfing culture that promises to entertain and inspire!
