Gloucestershire Heritage Railway Celebrates Rail History with Global Whistle
As the clock struck noon on New Year’s Day, a remarkable event unfolded that resonated across the globe, from the heart of Gloucestershire to far-off places like New Zealand and South Africa. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) joined in a unique celebration known as “whistle up,” which honored the 200th anniversary of the modern railway. Railway enthusiasts braved the drizzling rain, ringing true to their passion, as they welcomed a festive and historic occasion with jubilant whistles from the locomotives at both Broadway Station and Cheltenham Racecourse.
Organized by the Heritage Railway Association, this extraordinary event aimed to recognize the bi-centenary of the railways, dating back to the inaugural run of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825—the world’s first commercially successful railway for transporting passengers and goods. This pioneering railway laid the groundwork for transport systems that would transform industries and societies, making rail travel an integral part of modern life.
At Broadway Station, the spotlight was on the Great Western Railway-designed Manor class 4-6-0 no. 7820 Dinmore Manor, taking center stage to signify the momentous occasion. Simultaneously, over at Cheltenham Racecourse, the recently refurbished Great Western Railway heavy freight 2-8-0 no. 3850 added its voice to the chorus of celebration. These historical trains remind us of the rich heritage within the UK rail system and its significant role in our transportation evolution.
The GWSR operates a picturesque 14-mile stretch of railway connecting Cheltenham Racecourse to Broadway, a route that captures the essence of the Cotswolds’ scenic beauty. Despite the original Broadway station being demolished in 1963, dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to restore this historic site to its former glory, ensuring that future generations can appreciate the charm of heritage rail travel.
Looking ahead, GWSR has an exciting lineup of events planned throughout 2025, aiming to capture the spirit of rail history. From the Cotswold Festival of Steam over the May bank holiday weekend to a Heritage Diesel Gala in July, there’s something for everyone. Mark your calendars for the Rail 200 special weekend, set to take place on September 27th and 28th, and don’t miss the autumn showcase scheduled for October 25th and 26th.
With its dedication to preserving and celebrating railway heritage, GWSR not only connects communities but also invites visitors from across the globe to experience the charm of steam rail travel.
