Exciting New After-School Kumon Program Debuts at M H Greef Primary School!

Kumon Maths Programme Launches at M.H. Greef Primary School in Windhoek, Namibia

In an exciting development for education in Namibia, the M.H. Greef Primary School in Windhoek has officially launched an after-school math and reading programme, made possible through generous funding from Japan. This initiative, part of the internationally renowned Kumon Maths Programme, is designed to uplift Namibia’s educational landscape and foster the growth of industrial human resources from a young age.

Kumon’s unique approach emphasizes self-learning techniques, encouraging students to cultivate essential skills such as perseverance, concentration, discipline, and effective time management. This commitment to holistic personal development is not just about mastering arithmetic; it’s about equipping learners with the tools they need for success.

Milton ya Otto, the Khomas Education Inspector, expressed his gratitude for the initiative, highlighting its significance amid Namibia’s quest to strengthen its educational framework. “Namibia is competing with the SADC region and internationally for the best education system,” he noted. “It’s crucial that we enhance our educational efforts and meet the needs of our learners. The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports and Culture has shown dedication to ensuring that projects like this are actively supported in our schools.”

Principal George Kandetu of M.H. Greef Primary School reflected on the transformative potential of the programme. He shared a memorable moment from one of the sessions: “A teacher asked the students about the dos and don’ts of calculating, and I was impressed by their response—‘Don’t use your fingers. Use your mind.’ This kind of mental arithmetic enhancement is exactly what we need.”

The Ambassador of Japan to Namibia, Asazuma Shinichi, also weighed in, expressing hope that the Kumon Programme will yield substantial benefits for Namibian scholars and further strengthen the bond between Japan and Namibia. He emphasized the global footprint of Kumon, which operates in over sixty countries, and has already established two private learning centers in Namibia.

The programme is set to run until the end of November, promising to deliver a meaningful impact on the students’ academic journey and pave the way for future educational opportunities in the country.

This initiative not only underscores the importance of international collaboration in education but also highlights Namibia’s ambition to elevate its educational standards to new heights. As the country continues to invest in its educational framework, it sets a positive example for others in the region and beyond.
