Algeria Sets Ambitious Plans for Renewable Energy Expansion
In an exciting development for renewable energy in North Africa, the Algerian Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energy is gearing up to launch a 1,000-megawatt wind power project. This initiative follows a recent study highlighting the “considerable potential” for wind energy in Algeria, according to Noureddine Yassaa, the State Secretary for Renewable Energy. Speaking at the 2nd International Workshop on Renewable Energy in Algiers, Yassaa emphasized the commitment of Algeria to integrate wind energy into the nation’s future energy portfolio.
In collaboration with the World Bank, Algeria is currently exploring possible sites for this ambitious wind project, which will span across ten selected areas known for their wind potential. This initiative is a stepping stone towards realizing Algeria’s overarching goal of generating a staggering 15,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2035.
But that’s not all! In addition to the wind power project, Yassaa revealed plans for a substantial 3,000-megawatt solar energy project that will feature 20 new power plants, contributing significantly to the renewable energy landscape. One notable solar facility will be built in the Tindouf province, designed not only to produce energy but also to meet regional demands, thus supporting local industries, including the extraction and processing projects in the Gara Djebilet iron mine area.
The minister also mentioned innovative hybrid solutions, aiming to integrate solar power into existing diesel facilities in southern Algeria. These projects reflect Algeria’s ambition to leverage its sunny climate and natural resources to create a greener, more sustainable energy future.
With the total renewable energy capacity projected to exceed 4,000 megawatts, Algeria anticipates saving approximately 1.3 million tons of natural gas each year, while effectively reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2.7 million tons.
Looking beyond traditional renewables, Algeria is setting its sights on green hydrogen as a key area of development. The country aspires to position itself as a leading hub for the production and export of this innovative energy source. The Algerian government has adopted a comprehensive national strategy to tackle challenges related to production, processing, storage, and transport, along with ambitious megaprojects connecting Algeria to European markets.
As Algeria continues to make strides in renewable energy, it’s clear the nation is prioritizing sustainable development and showcasing its potential as a leader in the green energy sector in Africa.
