Remembering Diane Lea: A Life of Compassion and Family
Diane Lea, a beloved matriarch, peacefully passed away at Health Sciences North in Sudbury on November 17, 2024, at the age of 76. Her family, including her son Braeden from Toronto and step-son Lyndon along with daughter-in-law Sophie from The Bahamas, are left to cherish her memory. Diane also leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren—William, George, Mary-Ellen, Breanna, Chiara, Zack, Sylvie, and Zaydon—and great-grandchildren Daniel and Reegan. The warmth of her family extended furthers into the lives of her siblings, Brian, Murray, and Alan, as well as countless nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her.
Born in Matheson, Diane made a significant move to Elliot Lake in 1961 with her parents, who both preceded her in death. A dedicated student, Diane graduated from Elliot Lake Secondary School and later pursued a career in nursing, attending Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing. Her professional journey took her from nursing in South Africa to Toronto and eventually back to Elliot Lake, where she provided compassionate care at St. Joseph’s General Hospital until rheumatoid arthritis prompted her early retirement.
Diane will be remembered not just for her nursing career, but for being the heart and soul of her family. Known for her innate ability to connect with loved ones, she was a reliable source of support, never missing a birthday and always ready to lend an ear. Diane had a special knack for storytelling, often delighting her family with detailed updates about her flourishing garden on Valley Crescent.
A service celebrating Diane’s life is scheduled for Friday, November 22, 2024, at 3 PM at the Moose Lodge in Elliot Lake, with Reverend Cory Vermeer-Cuthbert officiating. Her ashes will be interred at Woodland Cemetery the following day, creating a serene resting place that reflects her love for family and nature.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the attentive staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elliot Lake and the ICU team at Health Sciences North for their compassionate care during Diane’s final days. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Arthritis Society Canada, an organization close to Diane’s heart.
