Marape Calls on Key Players to Deliver Insights on Dirio’s Progress

PNG's Power Provisions: Prime Minister Marape Calls for Transparency and Commitment to Reliable Energy Solutions

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – In a recent development that has caught the attention of power consumers and stakeholders alike, Prime Minister James Marape has strongly urged Dirio Gas and Power Company and PNG Power Ltd (PPL) to provide a comprehensive report regarding the current situation affecting energy supply in the capital city. Marape’s request comes amid growing concerns surrounding the existing Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and has sparked discussions about the effectiveness and efficiency of power delivery in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

With a keen interest in ensuring that the needs of consumers are met, Marape reiterated his government’s commitment to delivering low-cost, reliable, and environmentally-friendly electricity across urban centers and rural communities. The Prime Minister expressed his belief that the terms of the PPA made between Dirio and PPL were intended to affordably and reliable power, a goal that has yet to be fully met.

“This situation isn’t just a matter for Dirio and PPL; it also reflects on other agreements we have with private power producers like Edevu and Niu Power,” Marape stated. He explained that these partnerships were designed with specific outcomes to benefit consumers but observed some discrepancies in pricing and power delivery, urging stakeholders to step up to fulfill their obligations under the agreements.

Despite challenges, Marape remains optimistic about the steps his government is taking to overhaul the power sector. Noting that “PNG Power has faced its share of setbacks,” he highlighted significant efforts made by the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises over the past five years to enhance operational efficiency. Marape proudly shared that the government has successfully implemented a noteworthy PPA with Edevu, which now supplies 54 megawatts of electricity to Port Moresby at competitive rates—a positive step for energy affordability.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the goal remains consistent: to provide low-cost, reliable energy sourced from various renewable energies, including hydro, solar, and geothermal, along with gas-fired power. “Our vision is crystal clear. We want affordable energy for all,” he said passionately.

Interestingly, Marape confirmed that Dirio is owned by several local provincial governments and landowners related to the PNG LNG Project, suggesting a collaborative framework aimed at fostering community involvement in energy management. As PNG looks to navigate its energy landscape, the call for improved transparency and accountability reflects a commitment to empowering consumers and local stakeholders alike.

As energy issues remain hotly debated in many regions, the situation in Papua New Guinea holds valuable lessons on the importance of ensuring that agreements serve the public good. For more on developments in energy and infrastructure across Africa, stay tuned to Africazine.
