Exciting News: Lagos-Calabar Highway’s First Section Set to Open by May 2025!

Construction of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Gaining Momentum: A Promising Future for Nigeria's Infrastructure

The Nigerian federal government is making strides with the ambitious construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a project that is set to redefine road connectivity in the region. As confirmed by Minister of Works, David Umahi, the first segment of this crucial 47-kilometre stretch is on track for completion by May 2025, promising to enhance transportation across multiple states.

During a recent site inspection, Umahi expressed confidence in the capabilities of the construction company, Hitech, noting their impressive track record of achieving one kilometre of concrete pavement in just one day. This level of efficiency is pivotal for hitting the projected timeline, which has generated a buzz of excitement among local communities eager for improved infrastructure.

Furthermore, Umahi addressed concerns about the environmental challenges faced during construction, particularly the previous use of certain areas as refuse dumpsites. While this posed some initial delays, the minister assured stakeholders that robust measures are in place to mitigate any impacts on the overall timeline. “We have high-quality work in progress, and I am optimistic about our project’s success,” he stated, highlighting the critical nature of proper sand settlement as the most challenging aspect of the project.

Echoing the minister’s sentiments, Olukorede Kesha, the federal controller of works in Lagos, provided additional insights into the project. She acknowledged the depth of refuse that had accumulated in some areas—up to six metres—but reassured the public that these challenges had been factored into the construction plan and that evacuation efforts were underway.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is not merely a road project; it represents a string of opportunities for economic growth, tourism, and improved logistics across Nigeria. Stretching an impressive 700 kilometres, it will connect major coastal states, including Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. The project carries a significant budget of N15 trillion, with each kilometre priced at approximately N4 billion, reflecting a monumental investment in Nigeria’s future infrastructure.

As the construction progresses, citizens eagerly anticipate the transformative potential of this highway, which promises not only to ease transportation but also to bolster economic activity and access to popular tourism destinations along Nigeria’s scenic coastline.
