Discover Exciting Enhancements for Visitors at Kankakee Sands’ National Bison Day Celebration!

Celebrate National Bison Day in Kankakee Sands: A Day of Fun, Learning, and Community Connection

On Saturday, November 2, nature enthusiasts and families alike are invited to the picturesque Kankakee Sands to celebrate National Bison Day! This exciting event is dedicated to honoring the majestic bison and their crucial role in maintaining and enriching our prairie ecosystems.

Alyssa Nyberg, the Restoration Ecologist at Kankakee Sands, shares her vision for this day: “We want National Bison Day to be an occasion where the entire community can come together for a memorable, family-friendly experience that’s completely free.” Through showcasing our local bison herd, attendees will discover how these magnificent animals positively influence our environment. Nyberg explains, “Bison grazing habits help promote biodiversity—by consuming certain grasses, they allow for a burst of flowering plants, which in turn supports various insects. These insects become food sources for birds and other wildlife, creating a vibrant ecosystem.”

Attendees can look forward to new visitor amenities being unveiled on this special day, including upgraded parking, sturdy concrete walkways, elevated viewing platforms, and updated educational signage. Nyberg highlights a significant aspect of these enhancements: “Our educational signage aims to be more accurate and inclusive.” Thanks to the collaboration with Indigenous communities such as the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, the new signs will include translations of Indigenous terms describing the local habitats and species, fostering a deeper appreciation for the land and its history.

Excitement is palpable as Nyberg invites everyone to explore the improvements at Kankakee Sands. From November 2 onward, the facilities will be open daily, allowing visitors to appreciate the natural beauty at their leisure.

Kicking off the day’s festivities will be an 8 a.m. bird-watching session, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:20 a.m. at the Welcome Center on U.S. 41. Attendees can join two guided tours of the bison corral, led by Oliva Schouten, the bison manager. Additionally, a unique presentation by Dani Tippmann from the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma will delve into the cultural and ecological significance of native plants.

The day promises to be filled with children’s activities, nature crafts, and interactive displays showcasing prairie management equipment. And no celebration is complete without food—local vendors will have a food truck on-site to refuel visitors enjoying a day immersed in nature.

Kankakee Sands is located at 3294 N. U.S. Highway 41 in Morocco. Mark your calendars for this enriching experience and make the most of a beautiful day celebrating nature, culture, and community!
