Empowering Future Leaders: GIC Foundation’s “Empowered to Succeed” Programme
The Girls in Charge (GIC) Foundation is on a mission to empower the next generation, and they’re doing it in style! Yesterday marked a significant milestone as the foundation hosted its second “Empowered to Succeed” event, an initiative dedicated to inspiring and equipping over 2,000 final-year secondary school students in Lagos State. With interactive sessions designed to mentor students on how to navigate their upcoming exams, the event drew a crowd from various state-owned secondary schools, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of learning and positivity.
Spearheaded by the dynamic founder Victory Oyakhilome, the “Empowered to Succeed” programme first launched last year, showcases the foundation’s commitment to providing financial support, mentorship, and a pathway for youth to reach their full potential. Oyakhilome emphasized that while the programme primarily focuses on empowering young girls, it is inclusive of boys, underscoring the foundation’s belief that success is a shared goal for all students.
“The vision behind this initiative is clear: we want to reach out to SS3 students preparing for university admission,” Oyakhilome explained. Many students are often uncertain about the examination processes for critical assessments like the National Examinations Council (NECO), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). By providing essential guidance, the GIC Foundation aims to boost their confidence and academic performance, with previous recipients of scholarships allegedly achieving remarkable results.
The event featured talks from officials representing various educational boards including JAMB, NECO, and WAEC, who provided invaluable insights into exam preparation and key strategies for success. This alignment with educational bodies demonstrates the foundation’s dedication to fostering a well-rounded educational experience, one that equips students with the right tools to succeed.
Lagos State’s Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by Feyisayo Alayande, Acting Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, praised the foundation’s efforts in nurturing the youth. He stated, “These young people are the architects of our future, and it is essential that we invest in their potential.” The governor also echoed the programme’s goals, emphasizing the importance of innovation, inclusion, and youth empowerment as central themes in Lagos State’s vision for development.
He encouraged the students to seize every opportunity the state has to offer while fostering valuable connections within their communities. “Always be vocal about challenges you face, seek guidance, and enrich yourself with skills that enhance your career prospects,” he advised. With initiatives like those by the GIC Foundation leading the charge, the future looks bright for Nigeria’s youth. This commitment to student success not only inspires the current generation but also lays the groundwork for a brighter, more empowered tomorrow.
