“Building a Hydrogen Highway: Bridging Algeria and Europe for a Sustainable Future”

On October 16, 2024, Algeria marked a significant milestone in its energy landscape by unveiling a collaborative hydrogen project with several prominent European companies. This groundbreaking agreement promises to pave the way for a robust hydrogen corridor, connecting North Africa and Central Europe, which could transform the renewable energy sector across the region.

A Vision for Renewable Energy

The newly formed partnership includes notable players such as Algeria’s own Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, along with Germany’s VNG, Italy’s Snam, Eni and Snam’s joint venture SeaCorridor, and Austria’s Verbund Green Hydrogen. The signing ceremony, held at the Palais des Congrès in Oran, brought together Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and executives from these international companies, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the initiative.

The primary aim of this agreement is to explore the possibility of producing green hydrogen in Algeria, which would then be exported to Europe through the SoutH2 corridor. Stretching 3,300 kilometers, this pipeline is set to link North Africa to Italy, Austria, and Germany. Significantly, the European Commission is backing this venture, which seeks to deliver renewable hydrogen by upgrading existing pipelines and infusing new infrastructure where necessary.

Officials are optimistic that this corridor will significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels, urging a global transition towards sustainable, low-carbon energy solutions. Should this project succeed, it not only has the potential to fulfill Europe’s growing demand for green energy but also places Algeria in a pivotal role as a vital energy supplier for the continent.

Why Algeria is a Prime Candidate for Hydrogen Production

Algeria is uniquely positioned to become a leading player in the hydrogen market. With abundant sunshine, a robust electricity network, and extensive water resources, the country boasts a viable environment for green hydrogen production. The Algerian government has ambitious plans to generate 15 gigawatts of energy from renewable sources by 2035, with 3 gigawatts earmarked for the national grid, showcasing its commitment to a sustainable future.

During a recent hydrogen summit in Italy, Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin underscored Italy’s significant investment exceeding 3 billion euros in hydrogen projects, reflecting the nation’s dedication to building essential infrastructure. He projected that Europe will require around 20 million tons of hydrogen by 2030, with a substantial portion expected to be imported, placing Italy in an advantageous position for hydrogen transit in the region.

This collaboration not only illustrates the potential for innovation in renewable energy but also highlights Algeria’s commitment to leading the charge towards a greener future. As both Algeria and its European partners embark on this transformative journey, the future of energy in the region looks brighter than ever.
