Namibia’s Renewable Energy Revolution: A Bright Future Ahead
Namibia is on the brink of a renewable energy transformation, with the Namibia Power Corporation (NamPower) actively working on over six exciting projects designed to contribute 250 megawatts (MW) to the national electricity grid. According to Simon Haulofu, the Managing Director of NamPower, these initiatives are part of an ambitious 2020-2025 Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP) that aims to boost energy security through innovative and sustainable power generation.
One of the most significant achievements in this green journey is the 20MW Omburu Solar Photovoltaic (PV) plant, operational since April 2022. This project symbolizes a major step forward in Namibia’s renewable energy sector. As Haulofu proudly states, “We are confident that once these projects are completed, they will significantly contribute to our national grid,” solidifying Namibia’s position as a leader in renewable energy efforts in Africa.
The wind is also at Namibia’s back with the upcoming 20MW Khan Solar PV project, which is set to be completed between late September and early October 2023. With an inauguration already in the pipeline, this development reflects the growing interest of independent power producers in the country’s energy landscape.
Looking towards Walvis Bay, the Anixas II Power Station, a state-of-the-art 50MW facility, is in its final stages of testing and commissioning. This project, which has an investment value of N.259 billion, promises to make a significant contribution to the grid, following the signing of a crucial engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract in 2022.
Adding even more diversity to Namibia’s energy mix is a 40MW biomass power plant slated for Tsumeb. “I expect we will be ready to commence the next phase by the end of this month,” Haulofu announced, indicating a commitment to timely progress and development.
Wind energy is also taking center stage with the development of a 50MW wind power project in Lüderitz, led by the CERIM company. Heavy machinery is already being mobilized to the site, with Haulofu expressing enthusiasm for the pathway ahead.
But that’s not where NamPower’s ambitions end. The board is already strategizing for a new ISBP to guide future renewable energy projects. “We are bringing in consultants to ensure a successful execution of our future plans,” Haulofu added, emphasizing that the commitment to sustainable energy will continue to drive Namibia forward.
As Namibia gears up for this renewable energy surge, it sets a formidable example for other African nations striving for energy independence and sustainability. The unfolding projects not only promise reliable electricity for citizens but also represent a significant leap towards combating climate change through responsible energy solutions.
Stay tuned as Namibia continues to pave its way into an energy-efficient future!
