His artwork, titled “Germ Terminator,” brilliantly captured the theme of the future of mobility, earning him a spot among the top seven entries in the global competition for kids aged 12-15.
The award was presented to Theodore by Masaru Mikami, the chief executive officer of Ela Motors. During the exciting ceremony, Mikami proudly recognized Theodore as the second consecutive artist from Papua New Guinea to achieve this notable accolade. “Toyota encourages young people all over the world to dream through this annual global contest, and we hope to see even more aspiring Papua New Guinean artists shine in future contests,” he declared.
The Toyota Dream Art Contest, established in 2004, invites children from around the globe to unleash their creativity and envision what the future of mobility could look like. As part of its 17th edition this year, national contests were held in an impressive 90 countries, gathering a whopping 712,845 entries by March. With winners announced from diverse locales, Theodore’s achievement speaks volumes about the talent resonating from the Pacific nation.
Theodore, who is currently in grade nine at Gordon Secondary School in Port Moresby, expressed that his artwork was deeply influenced by the ongoing challenges posed by illnesses like cancer and the global pandemic. His thoughtful vision of the future reflects a desire for better health solutions made possible through advancements in mobility.
Ben Johnson, one of the internal judges responsible for sifting through over 300 submissions, emphasized the competition’s goal: to inspire and empower young minds to think critically about societal challenges and express their creativity in overcoming them. “Theodore’s artwork resonated with a universal theme that transcends borders, making it a standout choice for the global stage,” he noted.
The pride and joy felt by Theo’s family were palpable; his mother, Yaom Tomala, shared, “Theodore has always had a natural artistic flair, often seen doodling with his pencil and notebook. This victory will greatly support his creative journey.” With a dream now realized, Theodore’s success at the Toyota Dream Art Contest is sure to motivate other young artists in Papua New Guinea and beyond to pursue their passions.
This remarkable achievement not only highlights the incredible talent fostered in Papua New Guinea but also emphasizes the importance of encouraging youth creativity worldwide. As more young artists like Theodore continue to make their mark, the future of art and innovation looks promising across the globe.
