The Gauteng Education Department is setting a high standard with its commitment to ensuring that every learner has access to valuable skills that will serve them well in the future. On Saturday, this initiative took center stage at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg, where the first Multi-Certification Skills Programme (MCSP) mini-festival was held. The event aimed to highlight the importance of practical skills and modern education in preparing students for a rapidly changing job market.
MEC Matome Chiloane of the Gauteng Education Department made it clear that the MCSP is not just about earning a National Senior Certificate (NSC). The program is structured to provide every child in Gauteng with a minimum of one accredited skill each academic year, starting from Grade R all the way to Grade 12. This hands-on approach allows learners to graduate with an impressive array of skills certifications alongside their NSC, making them more competitive and well-rounded individuals.
The festival showcased the 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution) Skills Basket, a key component of the MCSP that focuses on cutting-edge fields such as coding, robotics, artificial intelligence, drone technology, and digital literacy. Under the engaging theme, “Extend Your Reality,” students from various schools dazzled the audience with presentations that spotlighted their innovative projects and newfound knowledge. Chiloane emphasized that programs like this are crucial for building a generation of global citizens capable of tackling future challenges with creativity, leadership, and teamwork.
“The MCSP is transformative,” stated Chiloane. “It empowers our learners with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive in the modern world. Today’s festival exemplifies our commitment to innovative education in Gauteng.”
As the department looks to the future, plans are underway for additional mini-festivals focused on general and technical skills baskets, thereby expanding the pool of competencies that learners will develop throughout their schooling. This initiative not only boosts creativity and problem-solving skills but also fosters a sense of confidence and community among learners.
Education is evolving, and the Gauteng Education Department is making sure that its students are not left behind in this ever-changing landscape. By prioritizing skills-development programs like the MCSP, they are cultivating the leaders of tomorrow, one skill at a time.
