Empowering Women Politicians in The Gambia: A Catalyst for Change
By Amadou Manjang
In an inspiring move towards gender equality in politics, the National Centre for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has successfully conducted a training session for 20 aspiring women politicians in Janjanbureh. This initiative comes as part of the UNDP Women Leadership Project, designed to equip women with the necessary skills and strategies for grassroots mobilization and effective campaigning as they prepare to enter the upcoming electoral cycle.
The training, held on Thursday, was not just an educational event but a landmark step in empowering women in The Gambia to take their rightful place in political leadership. Thomas Kimau, the Project Head of the UNDP Women Leadership initiative, emphasized the urgency of this empowerment. “We have a mandate to empower women,” he said, highlighting the importance of changing societal mindsets as well as revising laws that inhibit women’s full participation in governance.
The focus of the program lies in building the confidence and capabilities of women, ensuring they are well-prepared to engage in political contests. Kimau reiterated the importance of supporting grassroots organizations and political parties to enhance women’s representation at all levels. This aligns with The Gambia’s National Development Plan, which seeks to secure a minimum of 30% representation of women in public office.
Governor Ousman Bah of the Central River Region added a heartfelt message, urging women to remain steadfast in their political ambitions. “Women should not leave all political positions in the hands of men,” he noted, recognizing the pivotal role that women’s leadership plays in national development alongside youth participation.
Furthermore, Yusupha Bojang, Chief Civic Education Programme Officer, emphasized the power of women supporting one another in their political journeys. “With the required skills, women can empower each other to win parliamentary seats,” he stated, encouraging attendees to prepare sharply for the forthcoming electoral cycle.
This training not only marks a significant step forward for women in Gambian politics but also serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring leaders across the continent, reinforcing the idea that when women rise, communities flourish.
The future appears bright as these trained women are poised to bring their unique perspectives and skills to the political arena, demonstrating that effective leadership knows no gender boundaries. As more initiatives like these emerge, they pave the way for a more inclusive and representative governance structure in The Gambia and beyond.
