Empowering Women through Skills Training: A Look at APTC's Remarkable Achievement in Papua New Guinea
In a significant milestone for gender equality and workforce development, 36 women were among 102 individuals who recently earned Australian qualifications in various fields through the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC). This initiative is all about breaking barriers and empowering individuals in industries such as carpentry, hospitality, commercial cookery, light vehicle mechanical technology, and engineering pathways.
The APTC’s 21-week certificate program aims to provide hands-on training and certification that can open doors to global employment opportunities. Nicki Baird, the executive director of APTC, expressed her enthusiasm about the growing participation of women in traditionally male-dominated fields. “This is truly a step in the right direction for both Papua New Guinea and Australia,” she stated. The increasing representation of women in these sectors not only fosters individual growth but also contributes positively to the economy.
Baird emphasized her commitment to seeing this trend continue, encouraging more women to participate fully in these programs. “The certificate from APTC serves as a strong foundation for all graduates. With a vibrant alumni network of over 1,000 individuals across the region, they now have avenues to explore employment opportunities not just in Australia and New Zealand, but globally,” she added.
Since its inception in 2007, APTC has made a profound impact, supporting more than 1,200 women from Papua New Guinea who graduated with sought-after Australian qualifications. It’s heartening to see the results of this initiative, especially the performance of women in engineering fields. Notably, 14 women successfully navigated studies promoting skills in engineering pathways, showcasing their talent and determination. Among them, Jivi Kopi made headlines as the only female graduate in the field of light vehicle mechanical technology—a remarkable achievement symbolizing the breaking of stereotypes in technical domains.
As we celebrate this progress, it becomes essential to recognize the broader implications of such training initiatives. Empowering women not only strengthens families but also enriches communities and fuels economic growth. The future looks brighter as more inspiring women emerge from APTC programs, taking their skills to new heights and challenging the status quo in multiple industries.
