A Nostalgic Journey Through the Wheat Fields of Morocco

Recently, while organizing my wardrobe, I stumbled upon a gem: an old 24×36 film from my youth, still intact and ready for a digital revival. It took me on a nostalgic trip back to the vibrant 1970s, a pivotal decade when I was launching my photography journey in the enchanting country of Morocco, where I had the privilege of living with my family.

At the tender age of 20, I left the bustling city of Casablanca behind, eager to explore the rural charms of Morocco. A dear friend from my university invited me and a few others to visit his home village, a decision that would shape some of my fondest memories. The village was a hidden gem, nestled at the end of a vast, golden wheat field. Because the path to his home was unpaved and remote, the locals mowed a part of the wheat to create a makeshift road, allowing us to drive all the way to their doorstep.

The warm hospitality we received was extraordinary. Almost instantaneously, we felt like members of the family rather than mere guests. The village’s resident culinary expert prepared a traditional dish that remains etched in my memory: a succulent mechoui, roasted to perfection in an earth oven. This meal, cooked slowly over hours, was not just food; it was an experience that tantalized our taste buds and warmed our hearts. To this day, I consider it the best mechoui I have ever tasted, a delightful fusion of flavors that captures the essence of Moroccan cuisine.

This story serves as a reminder of the beauty found in simple experiences and the rich cultural tapestry that defines Morocco. Exploring the countryside not only broadened my horizons as a budding photographer but also deepened my appreciation for the warmth and kindness of Moroccan hospitality.

As we continue to appreciate cultural exchanges that bring people together, let this anecdote inspire others to delve into the beauty of local traditions and communities. After all, every experience is a story waiting to be told. Cheers to the memories that shape us and the roads—both paved and unpaved—that lead us to discover new horizons!
