“Transforming Education: The Dynamic Collaboration of CHOC and Core Unveils iSchoolAfrica”

In a heartening initiative that combines technology and compassion, CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA has joined hands with Core Group, the premier distributor of Apple, DJI, and Nintendo in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. This inspiring partnership has birthed the iSchoolAfrica iPad Learning Programme, launching across four hospital schools in Gauteng, notably the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital School. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that pediatric oncology patients maintain their educational journey, despite the challenges surrounding cancer treatments and extended hospital stays.

The program strategically introduces iPads, loaded with engaging and educational content, to children and teenagers undergoing cancer treatments. This innovative approach is designed not only to minimize learning loss but also to reduce anxiety and assist with various therapeutic activities. To seamlessly integrate this technology into their routines, comprehensive training is provided to hospital school teachers and CHOC volunteers. Core’s contribution includes iPads with built-in accessibility features and a broad selection of age-appropriate curriculum and entertainment applications, ensuring that every child can benefit from this initiative. “We are thrilled to partner with CHOC to support the needs and rights of young learners,” expressed Dian De La Port, the CEO of Core Computer Business.

Highlighting the profound impact of this program, let’s take a moment to reflect on the story of Xichavo Mhangani, a bright young boy battling osteosarcoma—a type of bone cancer. Despite facing significant challenges, Xichavo has not just survived, but thrived in his resilience. Acting as the head of a child-headed household, he wonderfully balances caring for his younger siblings while striving to meet his academic goals. At the CHOC house in Diepkloof, he found a supportive environment that made him feel at home during his treatment.

Xichavo’s narrative is a powerful testament to the potential of the iSchoolAfrica iPad Learning Programme. As he grapples with the effects of his treatments, the educational support provided could enhance his academic performance—leading him closer to his dream of becoming a chartered accountant.

September holds special significance in the fight against childhood cancer, as it is officially recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The gold ribbon, symbolic of hope and strength, reminds us of the resilience of affected children and their families. “The need for early detection, effective treatment, and robust support for families cannot be overstated,” stated Prof. Gita Naidu, Head of Pediatric Oncology at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. The World Health Organization’s Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer (GICC) aims to boost overall survival rates to 60% by 2030, ensuring that children like Xichavo can experience a life filled with dreams and aspirations rather than pain.

This collaborative effort underscores a shared mission of enhancing the quality of life and educational access for young cancer warriors. “For CHOC, this collaboration is a dream come true. Launching this program during September is a powerful way to raise awareness about the struggles faced by children and teens battling cancer,” remarked Hedley Lewis, CEO of CHOC. As we step into this awareness month, let us unite our voices and efforts to make a tangible difference for these brave young souls.

By calling attention to these initiatives and stories, we nurture a sense of community and support, proving that together, we can tackle the challenges posed by childhood cancer.
