Empowering the Next Generation: Vetland Grammar School Alumni Launch Vocational Training for Students
In a heartening initiative to equip the younger generation with practical skills, the Vetland Grammar School Old Students Association, specifically the 2003 Set, recently conducted a transformative six-day vocational training program for 130 motivated junior and senior secondary school students. This remarkable event took place at the school premises in Oko-Oba, Agege, from July 28 to August 8, and was aimed at providing participants with essential hands-on skills that can prepare them for a thriving future.
Students were introduced to a variety of vocational disciplines, including baking, fashion designing, photography, architecture, shoemaking, and plumbing. This carefully curated program ensured that the students not only learned about these crafts but also engaged in practical exercises that would enable them to apply their new skills in the real world.
The training was facilitated by a commendable team consisting of enthusiastic alumni, seasoned education officials, and dedicated former teachers. All were united in a common cause: to inspire the students to balance their formal education with essential practical experience. School principals and guidance counsellors present at the event highlighted the significance of vocational skills as a pathway to self-reliance and success in today’s dynamic job market.
Mrs. Bernice Osai, the Vice Chairperson of the 2003 set, was particularly motivating when she addressed the beneficiaries, urging them to apply their newly acquired skills. She eloquently remarked that these students have now been empowered not just for their own futures, but for the generations that follow them, exemplifying the ripple effect of education and skill-building.
The Lagos State Ministry of Education, District 1, was present to commend the high quality of the training program. Representatives encouraged the students to maintain focus on enhancing their capabilities, reinforcing the idea that continued personal development is vital for success.
Feedback from the participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Students like David Onakoya and Mudasiru Aanuoluwapo expressed their enthusiasm about delving into baking, cake decoration, photography, and dressmaking. They praised their alumni for launching such a beneficial initiative, and many even shared plans to explore entrepreneurial ventures alongside their educational pursuits.
This initiative by the Vetland Grammar School Old Students Association sets a precedent for future programs aimed at bridging the gap between education and practical skills. With the support of engaged alumni and the commitment of students, this initiative could very well inspire similar programs across the nation, driving positive change in the community and empowering countless other young individuals.
Through such vocational training programs, we are reminded of the power of collaboration and mentorship in nurturing the future leaders of Nigeria.
