Urgent Call for Healthcare Access in Rosh Pinah: Community Leaders Advocate for Local Clinic Support

In the vibrant community of Rosh Pinah, residents are rallying together to address a pressing issue that affects their daily lives: access to essential healthcare services. Members of the community are appealing to the government to station a doctor and a social worker at the town’s State clinic, which has been operating without a locally-based physician or social worker for an extended period.

According to Africazine, the current arrangement involves a doctor and a social worker traveling from the nearby town of Oranjemund to serve Rosh Pinah’s health needs on a weekly basis. This scenario is not ideal, as the community’s demand for medical assistance often exceeds what can be managed through sporadic visits. Local leader Wilma April highlighted the challenges faced by residents, who frequently encounter long waiting times and a concerning shortage of medications. “This town needs its own social worker. This town needs its own doctor,” April stated emphatically, reflecting the sentiments of many who are eager for improvements.

Rebekka Kayuru, a resident, expressed urgency, noting that individuals tend to delay seeking help until situations escalate to critical levels. The need for immediate, accessible care is evident, and community leaders are becoming increasingly vocal about their demands. Supporting their cause, RoshKor Township Manager Alexander Maasdorp shared updates about efforts to relocate a social worker from Oranjemund to Rosh Pinah. RoshKor, a collaborative initiative between the town’s two major mines, Skorpion Zinc and Rosh Pinah Zinc, is actively engaged in addressing the gaps in local healthcare provision.

Maasdorp also mentioned ongoing challenges that the Ministry of Health and Social Services faces with employee accommodation. To facilitate the incoming social worker’s transition, RoshKor is in talks with the two mines to explore housing options. Amid these discussions, it’s important to note that it’s also Men’s Mental Health Month, prompting Maasdorp to encourage men to seek out the support they need, highlighting a proactive approach toward mental wellness in the community.

As residents of Rosh Pinah continue to advocate for essential healthcare services, the broader implications for their well-being are clear. Accessible medical care is vital for fostering a healthy, thriving community, and it’s a mission that community leaders are determined to achieve. The pivotal next steps in this advocacy could serve as a model for similar initiatives throughout Namibia, emphasizing the importance of listening to community needs and taking action.

Stay tuned as we follow this developing story, along with its impact on health and wellness in Rosh Pinah and beyond.
