Exciting news from across the pond! The prestigious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, has taken a significant step in broadening its global reach with the recent chartering of a new chapter in London, United Kingdom. The Alpha Delta Alpha Omega Chapter officially came into existence on May 30, and it’s already making waves in the community.
This dynamic chapter comprises 25 charter members, each excelling in diverse fields such as real estate, finance, medicine, and business. Their commitment to community service is already evident, as they’ve collaborated with over a dozen local organizations over the past year. Collectively, they’ve distributed more than 350 Childhood Hunger Power Packs, affectionately known as CHIPP™ weekend meals, which provide vital nutrition to children in need. They’ve also prepared over 200 Blessing Bags, an initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable community members, and facilitated an eight-week entrepreneurship training program designed specifically for women.
These dedicated members have logged more than 200 volunteer hours and have invested upwards of £3,000 in Black-owned businesses—a testament to their desire to uplift and empower those around them. Looking towards the future, they’ve planned several initiatives for the upcoming months, including drives to collect professional clothing for women re-entering the workforce and a project to gather children’s books authored by Black writers to promote diversity and representation in literature.
Carrie J. Clark, the International Regional Director for Alpha Kappa Alpha, expressed her admiration for the new chapter: “These women are already making an enormous difference in and around London. They are an amazing group of servant leaders, and I am confident they will expand Alpha Kappa Alpha’s legacy of service in the Greater London area for years to come.”
Founded in 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is not just the oldest Greek-letter sorority established by Black college women but also one of the most influential. With a membership that exceeds 365,000 across 13 countries and territories, including the United Kingdom, the sorority has a rich history of empowering women and fostering community development.
Over the years, Alpha Kappa Alpha has spearheaded several international projects, from constructing schools in South Africa during apartheid to providing aid for women and children in Liberia and combating poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. They have also made financial history by founding the For Members Only Federal Credit Union, the nation’s first Black-owned, female-led sorority-based digital financial institution.
