President Salva Kiir Reshuffles National Constitution Review Commission and State Parliament Appointees in South Sudan

In a significant move signaling ongoing political adaptation in South Sudan, President Salva Kiir made notable changes to the National Constitution Review Commission (NCRC) on Friday evening. The president announced his decision through a decree broadcasted by the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), which saw three members of the NCRC being replaced as part of his effort to enhance the commission’s effectiveness in shaping the country’s constitutional future.

The former members—Dr. Majak Agoth Atem, a representative from the Former Detainees, Mary Akec Bior, representing women, and Koang Chot Lith, from various political parties—have been replaced by Riak Daniel Dual from the Former Detainees, Maria Gideon Galmar as the new women’s representative, and Mayen Jeremiah Turich who will represent other political parties. This reshuffle reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and representation in the constitutional drafting process.

Established under Presidential Order No. 02/2012, the NCRC plays a pivotal role in reviewing South Sudan’s Transitional Constitution. The commission is responsible for identifying necessary amendments, conducting public consultations, and ultimately drafting a permanent constitution that aligns with the aspirations of its citizens. The commitment to a thorough and participatory constitutional process is vital for South Sudan’s democratic evolution.

In addition to the changes within the NCRC, Kiir also reshuffled appointments in several state parliaments. In Unity State, he revoked the appointments of Peter Dang Beliu and Monaka Nyaura Duoth, replacing them with Lony Mathai Both Lek and Nyekong Chap Tek. Similarly, in Western Equatoria, Rizik Khamis Simon’s spot from the USAP Party was taken over by Taban David Zachariah Bauro. Changes also occurred in Lakes State and Upper Nile State, highlighting President Kiir’s intention to refresh leadership across various levels of governance for continued progress.

These shifts mark a proactive approach by the South Sudanese leadership in navigating the complex political landscape while striving for an inclusive governance structure. As the nation moves forward, such appointments and reshuffles are crucial for fostering a sense of unity and collaboration among different political factions.

For those following developments in South Sudan, this reshuffle not only underscores President Kiir’s strategic leadership but also promises potential positive impacts on the country’s journey toward stability and robust democracy. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story.
