In a significant step towards sustainable forest management and community empowerment, the All Gambia Forestry Platform (AGFP) has launched an ambitious training initiative aimed at enhancing entrepreneurship skills among locals. The project, generously funded by the FAO Forest and Farm Facility Initiative Small Grant, focuses on improving livelihoods through Non-Wood Forest Products, with a specific emphasis on beekeeping.
At the project’s inauguration ceremony, held recently, Mr. Ebrima Camara, the Coordinator of AGFP, provided a comprehensive overview of the initiative. “This project has successfully established four Interest Groups aimed at various Non-Wood Forest Products. Today’s training is specifically dedicated to the Beekeeping Interest Group, comprised of 25 enthusiastic members, with a remarkable 95% participation rate from women and youth,” Camara shared. This focus on gender inclusivity not only enhances community dynamics but also empowers women and young people in their pursuit of economic independence.
The training is meticulously designed to equip participants with essential skills and knowledge in beekeeping practices and the value addition of honey by-products. This initiative is crucial, not only for the development of individual livelihoods but also for fostering sustainable forest management practices essential for the environment.
During his welcoming speech, Mr. Simon Sarj, the Forest Officer for the Kafuta Administrative Circle, highlighted the pivotal role that such educational endeavors play in the sustainable management of forest resources. Sarj noted, “Sustainable forest management initiatives should not solely focus on wood products, as reliance on these resources can lead to degradation of forest cover.” He encouraged trainees to share their insights with peers in Community Forestry programs, reinforcing the importance of maintaining forest laws for the sustainability of this vital resource for future generations.
Mr. Kanimang Camara, the Country Facilitator for the FAO’s Forest and Farm Facility, congratulated the participants, emphasizing that the project’s selection was competitive and that six Producer Organizations were chosen for this promising venture. He expressed his enthusiasm over the high levels of female and youth involvement, urging them to leverage their new skills to uplift their livelihoods.
This initiative by the AGFP is more than just a training program—it’s a commitment to nurturing a sustainable future, making a significant impact on both local livelihoods and forest conservation in The Gambia. As the project unfolds, it symbolizes hope and a proactive approach to integrating community development with environmental stewardship.
