Johannesburg’s ANC Highlights Exciting Dates for Upcoming Elective Conference!

In a significant move ahead of the 2026 local government elections, the African National Congress (ANC) in the Greater Johannesburg Region has announced the dates for its much-anticipated elective conference set for June 20-22 this year. This gathering not only stands as a pivotal moment for party members but also serves as a platform for shaping the future direction of the region.

Following a recent special meeting, the Regional Executive Committee (REC) revealed that the conference will be preceded by a series of branch general meetings spanning from March 21 to May 15, with a cut-off date for membership set on March 20. This structured approach aims to enhance member engagement and ensure that every voice is heard as the party gears up for the important elections.

Among the highlights of the upcoming conference is the competitive race for the position of chairperson, with two prominent candidates: Loyiso Masuku, the current regional deputy secretary, and Dada Morero, the present chairperson and mayor of the City of Johannesburg. The dynamics of the contest are intriguing, as both candidates’ fortunes may hinge on their relationships with key figures within the party, particularly Regional Secretary Sasabona Manganye, who is seen as a powerful and unifying figure within the REC.

Insider reports suggest that Manganye may collaborate with Masuku, putting Morero in a strategic position where he might pivot towards supporting a different candidate for regional secretary. This maneuvering underscores the complexities of ANC politics and the importance of alliances in the lead-up to the election.

Adding a layer of depth to the proceedings, the regional Lekgotla has advocated for a consensus-based approach to resolving leadership challenges, encouraging stability and continuity as current officials look to serve a second term. This strategy emphasizes the party’s commitment to maintaining unity during a time filled with potential factionalism.

The overarching message from the ANC is one of engagement and renewal, urging all members and branches to participate actively in the conference. As articulated in their statement, this elective conference is not merely a procedural event but a critical juncture that will guide the organization’s future and reinforce its mission to foster a Johannesburg that reflects the aspirations of its diverse communities.

Manganye also highlighted the need for discipline and adherence to party rules as they navigate this leadership landscape, pledging to uphold the principles of unity and cohesion within the ANC. Their proactive stance promises a transparent and fair electoral process, which is essential for strengthening the party’s foundations in Greater Johannesburg.

As the ANC prepares for this important event, it is clear that the Greater Johannesburg Region is at a crossroads, and the decisions made during the conference could have lasting implications for the party’s future direction. It’s an exciting time for members, who are encouraged to rally together and contribute to a stronger and more united ANC.
