Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Railways with a Global 'Whistle Up'!
Railway enthusiasts and community members are invited to come together for a unique celebration on January 1, as they kick off a year-long tribute to the 200th anniversary of modern railways. This year marks a significant milestone, and what better way to herald this occasion than with an exuberant sound of whistles and horns at the town’s railway station?
The Bramley Line Heritage Railway group, which is aiming to establish a heritage line between Coldham and Friday Bridge in 2025, is one of the driving forces behind this heartwarming event. They are urging everyone, young and old, local residents, visitors, and railway fans, to join in the excitement during the Global ‘Whistle Up’ at noon on New Year’s Day.
Spearheaded by the Heritage Railway Association (HRA), the Railway 200 Whistle-Up will involve more than 50 heritage railways across the UK and beyond. Expect to hear the thrilling sounds of nearly 200 vintage steam and diesel locomotives blowing their whistles, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that’ll transport attendees back to the golden age of rail transport. Countries like Sierra Leone, France, Germany, and the United States will also participate, collectively demonstrating the global impact of railways on travel and trade.
In March, the Friends of March Railway Station are opening their facilities from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, leading up to the grand noise-making event at noon. Clive Freeman, chair of the Bramley Line Heritage Railway, expressed excitement over the local interest sparked through social media channels. “We hope to see a lively turnout as people bring their whistles and hooters to celebrate the official start of RAILWAY200,” he enthused.
The commemoration focuses on the launch of the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) in 1825—a pivotal moment that reshaped how we perceive distance and connectivity in our daily lives. Steve Oates, CEO of the HRA, emphasized the importance of recognizing the transformative power of railways: “From the concept of standardized time to convenient commuting, the railways created possibilities that have been fundamental to modern living.”
