Marsa Maroc has finalized a significant partnership with CMA CGM to enhance the Nador West Med port’s operations.

The French shipping group now holds a 49% stake in the Nador Container Terminal, while Marsa Maroc retains 51%. This partnership aims to establish Nador West Med as a key transshipment hub in the Mediterranean.

New Terminal Set to Boost Nador’s Capacity

The Nador Container Terminal will feature 900 metres of quay and an 18-metre draft, covering 37.5 hectares. It is designed to handle a capacity of 1.8 million TEU annually and is expected to commence operations in 2027. The terminal is part of a larger project that aims to enhance Morocco’s maritime infrastructure.

With a total area of 60 hectares, the terminal will be equipped with eight ship-to-shore cranes at full build-out. This development is crucial for positioning Nador West Med as a major player in Mediterranean shipping.

Investment and Strategic Importance of Nador West Med

The project has mobilized 51 billion dirhams in public and private investment, with private contributions reaching 20 billion dirhams. The port is set to have an initial capacity of 5 million containers and 35 million tonnes of liquid and solid bulk. In the long term, it has the potential to expand to 12 million containers and 15 million tonnes of liquid bulk annually.

Nador West Med will also host Morocco’s first liquefied natural gas terminal, with a capacity of 5 billion cubic metres, further enhancing its strategic importance in the region.

Upcoming Launch and Future Developments

  • Operational launch of the port planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
  • CMA CGM terminal scheduled to enter service in 2027.
  • Development potential includes additional container and bulk capacity.

This partnership positions Nador West Med as a pivotal maritime hub in the Mediterranean.
