The Gauteng Provincial Government has secured a significant upgrade for its rail network through a new concession agreement.

The Sihamba Sonke Mobility Consortium has been appointed as the preferred concessionaire for the Gautrain rapid rail network in Gauteng, South Africa. This 15-year agreement, covering the period from 2026 to 2041, involves the operation, maintenance, and refurbishment of the 80 km Gautrain express commuter rail network, which connects Johannesburg with O.R. Tambo International Airport and Pretoria.

Gautrain’s New Concession Agreement Details

The Sihamba Sonke Mobility Consortium includes several key players: the AIIM-Motseng joint venture, Alstom, RATP Dev, Gibb Crede, AIH Connect, and SSM InvestCo. The consortium will also oversee integrated bus services linked to the rail network. This project is part of South Africa’s public-private partnership framework, with the concession agreement signed with the Gautrain Management Agency.

Alstom’s involvement in this concession is valued at €800 million (US0 million). This investment will fund the supply of eight new four-car electric multiple units (EMUs), which will be manufactured locally. The addition of these trains will expand the Gautrain fleet from 24 to 32 units and will include a new signalling system to enhance operational efficiency.

Performance and Reliability of Gautrain Network

The Gautrain network has demonstrated impressive reliability, boasting an availability rate of over 99% during the past 16 years. This performance positions it among Africa’s most dependable passenger rail systems. The previous concession, held by Bombela Operating Company, expired on September 28, paving the way for this new agreement.

Despite the transition in management, the Gautrain remains a state-owned asset, with an estimated value of approximately R45 billion (US.72 billion). This ensures that the rail network continues to serve the public interest while benefiting from private sector expertise.

Next Steps for Gautrain Modernization

  • Implementation of the new concession agreement starting in 2026.
  • Manufacturing of new electric multiple units to begin shortly.
  • Installation of the new signalling system as part of the upgrade.

The Gautrain is set for a transformative upgrade, enhancing connectivity and reliability for commuters in Gauteng.
