South Africa’s youth employment initiative has surpassed its goals, creating millions of opportunities for young people.
Since its launch in 2020, the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention (PYEI) has generated over 2.6 million temporary earning opportunities, exceeding the initial target of 1.5 million. Deputy Minister Nonceba Mhlauli announced these figures during a quarterly report presentation in Pretoria on September 30, 2026.
South Africa’s Youth Employment Initiative Surpasses Goals
The PYEI has played a crucial role in providing young South Africans with income and experience. However, Mhlauli emphasized that temporary placements alone cannot fully address the issue of youth unemployment. The initiative also focuses on skills development and entrepreneurship, connecting young people with various opportunities.
In the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, the National Pathway Management Network recorded 139,693 earning opportunities. Of these, 106,093 were facilitated through SA Youth, while 33,600 came from ESSA. Notably, nearly 70% of the opportunities were accessed by young women, highlighting the program’s impact on gender inclusivity.
